Transportation and directions

Thursday February 25

Buses for the Packard Center tour will leave DC at 9:00 AM, returning at 3:30-4 PM.  Pick up/drop off location TBA.  If you plan to drive separately to the Center, contact Kevin Palermo for directions/parking info.

For the NPR tours, it is easy to take public transportation to the NPR headquarters at 1111 N. Capitol Street NW.  After going through security and signing in, one of our NPR participants will meet the group in the lobby.

Friday February 26

The LOC Madison Building can be reached conveniently by Metro.

  • Closest Metro stop: Capitol South (Orange/Blue Lines) – Exit station using main exit, walk approximately two blocks north on First Street SE.
  • Alternative Stop: Union Station (Red Line) – .5 miles

Saturday February 27

Buses for transportation to the Hornbake Library at the University of Maryland College Park will leave from the front of the Capitol Hill Hotel, 200 C Street SE, at 8:00 AM.

To reach Hornbake by public transportation: Take the Green Line to College Park, then hop on UMD shuttle #104 in the bus circle in front of the station. It will drop you off at Regent’s Garage, where you will exit, walk towards Campus Drive (the same direction the bus is facing) and then take a right on Campus Drive. You will see Hornbake Library on the right, and should go in the main entrance facing Hornbake Plaza.

Driving Directions

From Baltimore and Points North

Take I-95 South to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway (I-495). Take Exit 27 and then follow signs to Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Virginia and Points South

Take I-95 North to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway (I-495). Continue North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Virginia and Points West

Take I-66 East or I-270 South to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore/Silver Spring. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Annapolis and Points East

Take U.S. 50 to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Washington, D.C.(Northwest/Southwest)

Take 16th St. North, which becomes Georgia Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line. Continue North to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

Take Rhode Island Ave. (U.S. 1 North) which becomes Baltimore Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line. Proceed through the city of College Park. Turn left at Campus Drive.

Parking

From Campus Drive

Continue straight until you reach the circle with the floral “M”. Take the first exit from the circle to the right onto Regents Drive. The Regents Drive Parking Garage will be on your left, after the first stop sign. There is free parking on Saturdays on levels 2-5. These are named lots B and 5, and you can park in either lot. If you park on Level 1 where the meters are, you will have to pay the meter or risk a ticket.

Hornbake Library is within easy walking distance from Regents Garage. On level three at the west end of the garage, there is a pedestrian ramp that leads into Hornbake Plaze. Once you reach the plaza (you’ll see the statue of Frederick Douglass), the library will be on your left.
